Which things are actually fun to code?
#1
I discovered coding through C++ game development and I immediately fell in love. Making the physics, the enemy AI, ability interactions, and just the immense amount of creative problem solving required for any game made it so much fun.

Afterwards I branched out into Kotlin for android app development, and I absolutely hated it. There was no problem solving whatsoever, it consisted almost entirely of tediously checking existing library functions and syntax. I never had to implement any complex logic. Granted, I didn't do it for that long, so maybe there are some projects that would be more fun. But I never encountered any, and honestly hated the language regardless. I gave it up.

I also dabbled in a bit of front-end development, but coding in markup languages really doesn't count as coding to me. Boring. No logic.

Now I've moved onto Python, and while I like the language itself (very simple and intuitive), I haven't found anything to work on that is too interesting yet. I'm still a beginner, so I still have hope of finding something.

So far what I've done is the Automate the Boring Stuff with Python tutorial series. I've gone out on my own and automated a few tasks (ex: paying off my credit card balance) but nothing was too hard or interesting; just something that's convenient for me to have. But now I'm unsure of what to do with myself. I want to code for the sake of coding. I want to find something that is gripping and stimulates my mind. I want to be creative and solve problems. What possible directions could I go in? (I know I could develop games in Python as well, but I already have C++ for that and I want to see my other options).

I really don't care what areas it delves into; throw any ideas at me, no matter how far left field they may be. I'm just looking for new productive ways to stimulate my mind. (That's part of the reason I am moving away from game development. It's fun, but it doesn't feel like it benefits me in my life/is productive.) I'm even interested in hearing just your general thoughts on the topic. What you personally enjoy/don't.

EDIT: Some areas I have considered:
  • Getting into more advanced automation, although I'm not sure what sorts of things this would look like
  • Hacking, although I think it may actually be very tedious, and be less about coding and more about understanding network functionality
  • AI, but what really is AI? Outside of video games, it's all extremely simple. (ex: toaster) Unless I get into self-learning AI, but that feels like it would have a huge barrier to entry. And what would I want to have self-learn?
  • There's definitely way more I'm not thinking of. I just don't know enough about the possibilities.
